Erich

Erich

Erich
Erich (1)Boy, born May 2001
PRC
Blind
Erich is blind and participates in a program that provides high quality care and education for orphans who are blind or visually impaired. Every child has an individual education plan and the goal is to allow them to be independent and live life to the fullest. Erich came from a large orphanage that didn’t have any special programs for blind children. He had class with the other children his age, even though he is completely blind. Erich has a very technical and logical mind. He loves maths and science, and when he first came he learned Braille from scratch in just one week! He took to it very quickly. He loves knowing how things work, and for his 12th birthday, he got to visit an elevator factory and he loved listening to the engineers telling him how they worked. He used to have one leg longer than the other, but a recent X-ray showed that his legs are the same size! He can walk well but could do with some more physical therapy. In spite of all this, he has now run twice in a (mini) marathon and he often goes to the park to run 3-5km. Erich’s favorite food is tomatoes and his favorite subject is braille. When he grows up he wants to be an engineer! When asked what he would like to tell the world about himself he said “God lives in my heart!”

Gabe

Gabe

Gabe (1)
Gabe (2)Boy, born December 2008
PRC
Blind
Gabe participates in a program that provides high quality care and education for orphans who are blind or visually impaired. Gabe was only 18 months when he first arrived and he was terrified. He didn’t want to leave his ayi, and would cry whenever she put him on the floor. He didn’t smile a single time his first week. He didn’t speak at all, but would only cry if he wanted something. He enjoyed playing by himself with a few toys, but didn’t care to interact with the other children. He also didn’t want to walk. He has had both eyes removed due to Retinoblastoma, but he is cancer free now! He has two prosthetic eyes. After a short time, Gabe began to get used to his new environment. He started smiling all the time and began to enjoy exploring his new home. At first he walked incorrectly, but with the patient help of his ayis, he can now walk and run normally. He quickly learned that adults liked it when he showed affection, so he started hugging everyone all the time. Gabe has learned to talk, get his own water, eat by himself, and other self help skills. He is a fast learner and did so well in his last class that he moved up to be with the older kids. He has lots of energy and is learning how to sit still without fidgeting during his lessons. He has been using a cane to walk with and he walks very confidently – he has excellent skills in orientation and mobility. It has been amazing to see Gabe learn and grow. He is an amazing boy!

PRC
Blind
Lizzie is blind with light perception and participates in a program that provides high quality care and education for orphans who are blind or visually impaired. Lizzie is a beautiful little girl who has learning needs. She goes to primary school and she is in a special needs class, which means she has a lot of one-on-one teaching and therapy time. She has had speech and language therapy classes for 8 months and she has learned so much! She can communicate through signs but she has loved the freedom that comes with being able to communicate what she wants.
Lizzie really enjoys listening to music and hearing nursery rhymes. Since she can see a little bit, she likes to be in the light and wave her hand back and forth in front of her face. She also likes to sit on the seesaw, and gets a big smile on her face as she goes up and down. Lizzie loves to cuddle and will give almost anyone a hug. She also loves where she can move around, such as jumping on the trampoline and playing with big exercise balls. Lizzie will need some extra care and therapy when she is in a family. Maria

Girl, born 2002
Down syndrome
Maria is a bundle of sweetness and pure energy! She lives her life sort of like a game of bumper kids, not afraid of crawling over, through, or into other children to get where she wants to go. She is otherwise all girl, giggly and sweet, loving to blow kisses or play with dolls.
She is not speaking, but uses some sign language she may have made up to communicate her basic needs, such as thirst or needing to go to the bathroom. She also makes some of the most hilariously adorable facial expressions. She is not able to stand or walk, and she appears to have problems with her hips. She is very flexible, and often sits with one foot above her head. She can get around quite well in a very unique way of holding her feet and scooting along on her bottom, she moves at a very fast pace. She is a sweet girl who does not know about personal boundaries (such as crawling around instead of over the other children) but is nonetheless very loving and would probably do great in a family where she was the youngest.

Although he needs to get transfusions every month, he does not hate this matter; when it is the time to get transfusion, he can tell the family member that “I should go to get the transfusion, since I have no power, and I can not go up stairs”. He can speak fluently, and he also likes sports. Nicholas likes playing various toys; sometimes he even takes apart the 3-wheel car to play; sometimes he pushes the small chair to run over in the room; he likes to play in the zoo with the grandparents best.
